The Pharoah Sanders Quartet
Premiere in Israel
A special opening show

Tuesday 20/2, 21:00,The Mann Auditorium

An exciting cultural even by any criterion!
Sanders is not just another "great saxophone player" who came to visit us, but a unique central pillar in the history of modern jazz.
Born 1940 (Little Rock, Arkansas), Sanders began his career as a professional player in the 1960's. After years of struggling for recognition he met John Coltrane who added him to his late ensembles, which dealt with free and spiritual music. Coltrane remained the most significant influence on Sanders to this day.

Together with the late John Coltrane and the late Albert Ayler, Sanders is considered to be a founding father of the "New Thing" Jazz style in the late 60s. Some refer to this triumvirate as "The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost",

Throughout the years Sanders developed a unique sound of his own and recorded in a wide range of jazz styles: from free jazz to ballad tunes-always under the influence of Blues and African heritage and always leading ensembles with the best musicians in the field.
At the opening show of the festival Sanders and his praised ensemble will review his rich musical career with his own original pieces and interpretation to well known standards and the tunes of his revered friend John Coltrane.

"Pharoah is a man of large spiritual reservoir always trying to reach out to truth. He's trying to allow his spiritual self to be his guide. He's dealing, among other things, in energy, in integrity, in essences." (John Coltrane)
